FRESH AND VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL THREE-COLOR EAGLE ISSUE FRANKING AND EXTREMELY RARE USAGE FROM MARTINIQUE TO NEW YORK.

The U.S. rate was 34c by British Mail via either St. Thomas or Havana. This cover was prepaid 135 centimes with a credit of 1sh (24 cents) for the British Packet rate and 10c U.S. steamship rate collected from the addressee. (Image)

Dateline on folded letter to New York, clearly-struck red "Paid at San Juan Porto Rico" crowned circle handstamp, two Cuba, 1857, -1/2r Blue (22) tied by oval handstamps, red crayon "1/-" at top right and "Steamship 10" in circle, San Juan and St. Thomas backstamps, light file folds incl. one affecting stamps, otherwise Fine, attractive and unusual usage, one reale franking pays local postage and 10c was due from recipient, an exceedingly rare franking from Puerto Rico to the U.S. -- very few of the Lanman & Kemp covers were franked with stamps (Image) E. 2,000-3,000 1,900.00
