color, choice centering, tied by oval "Paid" handstamp, red "Boston Mass.
Oct. 28" double-circle datestamp on blue cover to Honolulu, Sandwich
Islands, edge wrinkles due to thick contentsEXTREMELY FINE. THE UNIQUE 90-CENT 1861 ISSUE ON COVER TO HAWAII. A REMARKABLE USAGE. This cover was the subject of analysis by Richard B. Graham in Opinions (Elizabeth C. Pope, Editor, published by The Philatelic Foundation, 1983). According to Graham, the use of a 90c stamp on a relatively small envelope indicates that the content must have been a small pamphlet or daguerrotype weighing between 4 and 4-1/2 ounces. He determined the year of use to be either 1861 or 1862. Ex Admiral Harris. With 1980 P.F. certificate (Image) |

"Aldrich, Walker & Co. Honolulu Shipping & Commission Merchants" oval
backstamp, stamps with few faults incl. right stamp expertly repaired at
top rightVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE MULTIPLE OF THE HAWAII 5-CENT THIRD PRINTING ON COVER. BELIEVED TO BE A UNIQUE USAGE. The Honolulu Advertiser collection contained a pair on cover, used with a U.S. 5c stamp (applied in San Francisco on July 20, 1864). On that cover, the pair of Hawaiian stamps included 5c prepayment of United States postage, as the cover was marked with the "Honolulu Postage Paid" datestamp. The cover offered here was franked the same way, probably intending to pay postage to destination with the Hawaiian stamps. However, the postmaster in Honolulu did not use the "Honolulu Postage Paid" handstamp, either due to error or because he thought the letter was overweight. When it reached San Francisco, the postmaster there treated the U.S. postage as unpaid and so marked it with the "Ship 6" handstamp for 3c postage plus 3c penalty for non-prepayment. Ex Sharbaugh, Van Dyke and Pietsch. With 1977 P.F. certificate. (Image) |

During the Eighth Period, from September 15 thru November 11, 1864, postal rates were misinterpreted by the postmasters in San Francisco and Honolulu. During this period, letters sent from Hawaii were prepaid according to the following schedule: U.S. postage at 10c per -1/2 oz, Hawaiian postage at 5c per -1/2 oz., and a ship fee of 2c per letter, regardless of weight. The cover offered here is an example of the 22c rate for letters between -1/2 and one ounce, where the ship fee was charged at a flat 2c rate. Illustrated in Meyer-Harris and Allen books.
