9thEXTREMELY FINE. AN IMMACULATE COVER FROM MAINE TO ST. PAUL DE LOANDO ON THE WEST COAST OF AFRICA. A SUPERB EXHIBITION PIECE. St. Paul de Loando was the capital of the Portuguese colony of Angola and a known area of activity for slave traders. The letter is addressed to the Third Assistant Engineer on the U.S.S. Mohican, which was patroling the waters off of Africa. In August 1860 the Mohican had captured the slave trader ship Erie in the Congo River. The 867 captured slaves were "repatriated" to Liberia.
