grids, red "Boston Br. Pkt. 40 Mar. 4" credit datestamp on 1863 blue folded

The famous Peirce correspondence is often plagued by stamps that have been removed and then hinged back onto their covers. The example offered here is in a remarkable state of preservation. It is especially scarce with the 5c Red Brown stamp. Only five covers are reported paying the 45c rate via Southampton. Of those, at least two have had the stamps removed and hinged back in place.
