Sep. 31 Paid" circular datestamp with day inverted on cover to Kanagawa, Japan, red London transit, endorsed "via Marseilles and Overland Mail" and "Care of Russell & Co. Shanghai, China" forwarding instructions, Hong Kong and Shanghai backstamps, various credit markings, few stamps defective VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 ISSUE USED TO KANAGAWA, JAPAN. The cover was actually sent to Shanghai, where it was forwarded to Japan by Russell & Co. Ex Faiman and Ishikawa.
