This cover to Augustine Heard & Co. is franked with $1.68 in postage, paying the rate for letters between 1-1/4 oz. and 1-1/2 oz. It was carried aboard the American Packet Fulton of the Havre line. The postage was split equally (84c apiece) between the United States and Great Britain, with the British postal system carrying the letter from Southampton to China via Marseilles. Augustine Heard & Co. was founded by its namesake after he left the firm of Russell & Co., where he was a partner. The firm established itself fairly quickly, and was a founding member of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in 1861. Ex Needham, Paliafito and Ishikawa. This cover has been the subject of many articles, including two by Stanley Ashbrook (Special Service and the 1951 17th American Philatelic Congress Book).
