EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR COVER TO GREECE BEARING THE 24-CENT VIOLET AND A PAIR OF THE 30-CENT 1861 EARLY SHADE. MAIL FROM GREECE TO THE UNITED STATES IS EXTREMELY RARE IN THIS PERIOD.

The cover is franked to pay the double 42c rate via Prussian Closed Mail. Covers to Greece in this period are extremely rare.

This cover was sent to Gibraltar at the 21c rate via French Mail. The cover was forwarded by British Mail via London.

New York" forwarder's backstamp with dates in ms., also ms. rating, London and receiving backstamp, small piece of forwarder's marking out from opening, tiny cover tear at top

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE USAGE FROM CUBA TO MALTA VIA THE UNITED STATES MAILS. A REMARKABLE COVER.

Franked by the sender to pay the 30c rate via French Mails, the cover was found to be overweight and so was sent at the 5c British Open Mail rate. The cover was treated as unpaid by Great Britain, who debited Malta 1sh8p for the 8p transatlantic postage, 6p rate from Great Britain to Malta, and a 6p fine for the unpaid letter. (Image)
