6c Carmine, Grill (137).
H. Grill, original gum, unusually rich color for this stamp, beautifully
centered with even balanced marginsEXTREMELY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARY ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 6-CENT 1870 NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE, COMBINING THE QUALITIES OF COLOR, CENTERING, AND IMPRESSION. A review of past auction catalogues serves to demonstrate how scarce this stamp is in sound, centered, original-gum condition. The Golin collection contained an example with disturbed original gum, Lilly's copy was sound with original gum, but off center, as was the example offered in Braus. Klein owned two off-center blocks of four. Most other collectors, including Zoellner and Weisman, had to settle for copies without gum. The two finest original-gum examples we have offered in recent years each realized $9,500. With 2004 P.F. certificate (Image) |
