According to Canal Zone Stamps, only two panes were printed with the double error. Of these, one pane is reported to be intact. This error was created by a foldover in the left vertical row of one pane, which caused "Canal" to print in the sheet margin. in top right corner selvage block of six missing the overprint, center

"Nal" of "Canal" and part of "e" of "Zone", slightly tropicalized original
gum, h.r., diagonal crease (which caused the error), bottom right stamp
defective, few tears in selvageFINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE 1926 2-CENT CARMINE WITH MISSING OVERPRINT. According to Canal Zone Stamps, these errors were created because the press was set up as a 100-subject overprint form to accommodate narrow selvage at bottom. When one pane was mistakenly inserted in the wrong direction the top row missed receiving the overprint, which was printed instead on the wide selvage at bottom. (Image) |

According to Canal Zone Stamps, official records indicate that all 250 panes from the lower right portion of the sheet were destroyed. However, three are known, including one in a full pane (ex Tows), which has not been seen for some time.
