EXTREMELY FINE. THE 90-CENT 1870 GRILLED ISSUE IS VERY RARELY SEEN WITH SUCH ENORMOUS MARGINS. A BREATHTAKING STAMP.

With 1993 P.F. certificate (Image)

1,800.00 4,000.00
393 image3c Green, Printed on Both Sides (147a). Front of stamp slightly dry print and with light strike of cork cancel, back of stamp printed inverted in relation to the front and with strong impression showing part of four stamps, single pulled perf at right

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 3-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN PRINTED ON BOTH SIDES. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THE BANK NOTE ISSUES.

The inverted impression on back is a result of the sheet being flipped end-over-end, rather than sideways, before it was put into the press a second time. Some other printed-on-both sides stamps share this characteristic, in particular Scott 78d.

The 3c Grilled Bank Note issue is not known printed on both sides. Scott Catalogue value for Scott 147a has remained virtually unchanged for over 30 years -- it catalogued $1,000.00 in 1971.

398 og image15c Bright Orange (152). Original gum, lightly hinged, choice centering with well-proportioned margins

VERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 15-CENT UNGRILLED NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE.

The 15c 1870 National Grilled Issue (Scott 141) is widely recognized as an extremely rare stamp in choice original-gum condition. Less well known is the fact that its ungrilled counterpart -- Scott 152 -- is comparably challenging to find in such condition. This stamp has all of the National printing characteristics, but it defies the norm by having exceptional centering and freshness.

401 og image30c Black (154). Original gum, small h.r., choice centering with wide margins, beautiful deep charcoal shade and detailed impression

EXTREMELY FINE. THE 1870 30-CENT NATIONAL UNGRILLED ISSUE IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT OF ALL BANK NOTE ISSUES TO FIND IN SOUND, WELL-CENTERED, ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

During the past few years, we have offered a few superb original-gum examples of other 30-cent Bank Note Printings, most notably Scott 165. Collectors have recognized the rarity of these stamps, bidding aggressively for the best stamps and often setting record prices. A search of our records and past auction catalogues finds only a few stamps on a par with this example.
