VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXTREMELY RARE DIE ESSAY FOR THE UNADOPTED DESIGN DEPICTING SENATOR JAMES BECK.

Although the design resembles the 1890 American Bank Note Company issue, this die was not started until July 11, 1894. Beck, a prominent Senator from Kentucky, passed away on May 3, 1890. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing used the old design from the 1890 Issue, and the new vignette was engraved by George F. C. Smilie, the leading engraver at the Bureau. It is not known why the design was rejected. (Image)
