276 ogbl image3c Rose, Ty. I (25). Block of four, original gum, bottom stamps Mint N.H., small h.r. at top, unusually bright and fresh color

FRESH AND FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1857 3-CENT PERFORATED TYPE I WITH THE BOTTOM STAMPS IN MINT NEVER-HINGED CONDITION. A GREAT RARITY.

As an indication of rarity, a search of our auction catalogues for the past ten years yielded only one other Mint N.H. example of this stamp, offered in our recent Silver Lake auction. The block itself is also very rare, and is of far better quality than most of the few others known.

With 1992 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as block of four with no premium for the Mint N.H. stamps. (Image)

278 image5c Bright Red Brown (28b). From the top row of the plate, beautiful rich color, well-centered on fresh white paper with remarkably wide margins that are virtually unseen on this issue, New Orleans circular datestamps and red transits

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A GORGEOUS USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1857 ISSUE IN THE BRIGHT RED BROWN SHADE. FEW EXIST IN THIS SUPERIOR GRADE.

Considering this stamp's intense shade and remarkable condition, we value it almost equally with the Indian Red, Scott 28A.

With 1996 P.F. certificate for horizontal pair, this being the left stamp (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT TYPE II ORANGE BROWN.

281 c image5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (30). Vertical pair and single, radiant color, tied by red grids, matching "New York Paid 12 Jul. 31" credit datestamp on 1861 blue folded cover to Lyon, France, red boxed "P.D." handstamp and Calais transit

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT TYPE II ORANGE BROWN USED ON COVER. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THE CLASSIC PERIOD.

The Orange Brown stamp was not issued until mid-1861, and its use was cut short by the Civil War and demonetization of circulating stamps. The last published update of the census of 5c Orange Brown covers by Dr. Richard M. Searing showed a total of 38 covers.

With 1967 P.F. certificate (Image)

E. 3,000-4,000 4,250.00
282 og image5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Original gum, wide margins, dark shade and detailed impression

EXTREMELY FINE. THE 5-CENT TYPE II BROWN IS RARE IN THIS ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

Unlike its Orange Brown counterpart, the 5c Type II in Brown was not on hand in post offices when the 1861 demonetization order took effect. Therefore, original-gum examples of Scott 30A are far scarcer than Scott 30. The narrow spacing between subjects on the plate and Toppan Carpenter's imprecise perforating leave collectors with very few well-centered original-gum examples.

With 1985 and 1996 P.F. certificates. (Image)
