EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III PERFORATED ISSUE IS RARE IN THIS CHOICE USED CONDITION.

Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with the perforations impinging on some portion of the design. The example offered here, is centered so that the type characteristics are clearly visible.

272 image1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Plate 4, horizontal pair, intense dark color on bright white paper, intact perfs with parts of adjoining stamps at top, chioce centering, neat New Orleans circular datestamps

EXTREMELY FINE. THE ONE-CENT TYPE III FROM PLATE 4 IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN PAIRS. IN PERFORATED FORM, THEY ARE EXCEEDINGLY RARE IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION.

Relatively few adjoining positions on Plate 4 produced Type III stamps, therefore, pairs of Scott 8 (imperforate) or 21 (perforated) are quite uncommon. Perforated multiples, while somewhat more numerous than imperforate, are usually cut in at top or bottom, thus reducing the population of high-grade multiples to a very small number. This pair, with wide margins all around that clearly show the type characteristics, is one of the finest extant.

With 1988 P.F. certificate (Image)

273 og image1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Original gum, small h.r., remarkably well-centered, deep rich color, tiny tear at bottom right only visible under extremely high magnification

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE IV 1857 ISSUE.

The Plate 1 Late sheets on hand in 1857 were perforated on the new equipment, but the spacing between subjects and Toppan Carpenter's generally poor perforating skills resulted in the majority being off center. Examples of Scott 23 with original gum (even if slightly disturbed) and this grade of centering are rare.

With 2000 P.F. certificate (Image)
