(Oct. 4)VERY FINE. ONE OF THE FEW COVERS EXTANT WITH THE "N" CANCELLATION OF NAGASAKI, JAPAN. A REMARKABLE MIXED-ISSUE FRANKING FOR THE 10-CENT TRANS-PACIFIC AND 7-CENT NORTH GERMAN UNION CLOSED MAIL RATES. Although undated, the use of the "N" cancel occured at Nagasaki during the fall of 1872, and the New York Sep. 21 and Hamburg Oct. 4 transit dates correspond to the 1872 saling of the Cunarder Batavia, which departed New York on Sep. 21 and arrived at Queenston on Oct. 2. The 7c North German Union Closed Mail rate via England was in effect in September 1872. Mail from Nagasaki prior to the arrival of the circular datestamp in late 1872 or early 1873 is typically cancelled with a form of obliterator, such as the "N", and then postmarked at the U.S. Post Office in Yokohama. 2c Brown (113). Three, one
with huge straddle-pane margin, each tied by "X" Chop cancel on
10c Yellow Green entire (U41) from China or Japan to Dublin,
Ireland, route notation "Via San Francisco & Overland", magenta
"2" handstamp with matching "San Francisco Cal. Apr. 14" datestamp on back,
Dublin May 3, 1870 receiving backstamp, filing pinholes (one thru 2c at
left)VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING 1869 PICTORIAL USAGE, ORIGINATING IN CHINA OR JAPAN, CANCELLED WITH THE DISTINCTIVE FAR EAST "CHOP" AND FULLY PAID FOR THE 10-CENT TRANS-PACIFIC AND 6-CENT TREATY RATES. The 16c prepayment (10c trans-Pacific and 6c treaty rates), route endorsement "Via San Francisco" and distinctive "X" Chop cancels are irrefutable evidence that this cover originated in China or Japan, although it did not enter the United States Post Offices in Nagasaki, Yokohama, Hiogo or Shanghai. The magenta "2" rate handstamp, which was applied at San Francisco, has been seen on other trans-Pacific covers, but its meaning is uncertain. Illustrated in The 1982 Register (p. 36). Ex Gibson. 10c Yellow (116).
Well-centered, vivid color, pre-use tear at left, used with 2c Red Brown
(146), pair, tied by cork cancels and "Yokohama Japan Sep. 13"
circular datestamp on 1871 folded cover to Lyon, France, sender's
endorsement "Open Mail Via England" and purple handstamp at lower
left, red "New York Oct. 17" and black Calais transit datestamps also tie
stamps, "GB/40c" accountancy handstamp, "10" decime due handstamp, London,
Paris and Lyon (Oct. 29) backstamps, addressee's name crossed out in
inkFINE APPEARANCE. AN OUTSTANDING USAGE FROM THE UNITED STATES POST OFFICE IN YOKOHAMA TO FRANCE, PREPAID FOR THE 10-CENT TRANS-PACIFIC AND 4-CENT BRITISH OPEN MAIL RATES. This cover is the twin (same mailing and transit dates, same sender and addressee) to the cover offered in the Ishikawa U.S.P.O. in China and Japan sale (Sotheby's, Jul. 7, 1981, lot 51). However, the Ishikawa cover was treated by the New York exchange office as a fully prepaid 10c rate to France via England and shows the 6c credit, London Paid transit and "PD" oval. The cover offered here was correctly rated as a 4c British Open Mail rate on the same day in New York, and it shows the "GB/40c" accountancy marking and "10" decimes due. Both covers travelled on the P.M.S.S. Arizona on its only run for the Pacific mail. Ex Knapp (Image) |
