Transit Apr. 23" (1870) backstamp, matching "8" credit handstamp, red London transit and "PD" in oval, Calais transit and French receiving backstamps, few small edge tears, otherwise Very Fine, colorful franking during "Phantom Rate" period, 12c was the unannounced rate to France and Algeria via England after expiration of the U.S.-French postal treaty, this cover was prepaid for old 15c rate and credited for 12c rate, signed Ashbrook (Image) E. 1,500-2,000 6,500.00
102 c image3c Ultramarine, 12c Green (114, 117). Tied by cork cancels, "Brownsville Tex. Oct. 10" circular datestamp on 1870 folded letter originating in Matamoros, Mexico, to Bordeaux, France, sender's oval handstamp, red London transit and matching "6" credit handstamp, few faults incl. large bleached areas, still Fine, scarce usage, carried outside of the mails from Mexico to Texas and overpaying the 10c rate via England, with Ashbrook notes and signature on back (Image) E. 500-750 425.00
