FINE-VERY FINE. A RARE AND COLORFUL FRANKING CONTAINING FOUR EXAMPLES OF THE ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPE IIIA ON A COVER TO GERMANY.

The 20c franking on this cover paid the rate via Bremen Mails. The cover was sent via American Packet, and all 20c was paid to the U.S. German postage was collected from the recipient. With 1987 Rendon certificate. (Image)

Three, two have ample to large margins, one slightly in at top, tied by "New-York Jan. 12" circular datestamp on Dec. 1854 folded letter from La Rochelle, France, to Philadelphia, illegally carried outside the mails to New York City, sender's bold greenish oval handstamp clearly identifies origin, "H.E. Rickenhath, Schneider & Co. New York" blue oval forwarder's backstamp, tissue-paper letter is fragile along folds (small hole at left), file fold between stamps barely affects right margin of center stamp, still Very Fine, a desirable example of bootlegged transatlantic mail (Image) E. 200-300 180.00

Apr. 30" circular datestamp on 1855 folded letter to Turin, Italy, red "New-York Br. Pkt. May 8" transit, faint red French transit also ties strip, ms. "17" rate, transit and receiving backstamps, file fold, small hole at bottom left, still Very Fine, a very scarce use of the 1c 1851 to pay 5c shore-to-ship rate on mail to Italy -- the few other strips known to us are used on covers to France (Image) E. 1,500-2,000 1,500.00
