Proof on India (LO1P3). Block of 50 from the lower half of right pane,
mounted on card, Positions 51-100R, Position 92R is the major double
transfer, large margins, bright and fresh, tiny corner crease in top
left margin, ten small "India on Card" handstamps on reverseVERY FINE. THIS IS THE LONG-LOST PROOF BLOCK FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE RIGHT PANE, THE RE-EMERGENCE OF WHICH PROVES THAT THE MAJOR DOUBLE TRANSFER COMES FROM POSITION 92R.
In our sales of the Hall and Johnstone collections, we featured examples of the double transfer in the "Cents" label. However, specialists have never been able to assign the double transfer to a specific position, because the large proof multiples were always from the other three quadrants of the plate of 200. This block, which has never been photographed or sold at auction, provides the answer: Position 92R, the second stamp from the left in the bottom row. (Image)
