VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 TRANS-MISSISSIPPI BI-COLORED ESSAY WITH THIS COLOR OF FRAME.

The $1.00 Trans-Mississippi comes in approximately seventeen colors. Approximately twelve are unique. These unique colors should not be confused with the two bi-colored essays that are considerably more common. (Image)

70 E image-1/2c Hale, Large Die Essay (551E1var). Eight, each die sunk on 151 x 202mm card with full die sinkage, colors incl. Green, Carmine, Orange, Rose, Yellow, Blue Green, Yellow Green and Carmine Rose, corresponding to the issued colors of the 1c, 2c, 6c, 9c, 10c, 11c, 13c and 20c 1922-25 issues, each with blue control numbers on back, pencil notation at bottom right corner of each notes color as used on issued stamps (Green with "1c", Carmine with "2c" etc.)

EXTREMELY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE GROUP OF HALF-CENT TRIAL COLOR ESSAYS FOR THE 1922-25 ISSUE. UNLISTED IN SCOTT AND OFFERED TO THE MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME.

Scott lists an Olive Brown Large Die Essay on a 151 x 202mm card signed by Harry S. New and assigns a value of $1,900.00. The colors listed here are not listed in Scott, and these are not signed by New.

It is interesting to note that the -1/2c Hale stamp was not issued until April 1925. The colors of the essays were already being used in the production of the other denominations in the series, as indicated in pencil on the cards.
