Carriers and Locals
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
3305 image1c Blue, Eagle Carrier (LO2). Horizontal pair, ample to large margins, cancelled by clear strike of Cincinnati red squared grid, Very Fine, Cincinnati was the only place where two Eagle carrier stamps were used to pay the 2c intra-city carrier fee, examples of such usage are extremely rare (on or off cover) -- this is reported to be one of two Eagle Carrier pairs with the red squared grid cancel, ex Johnstone (Image) E. 750-1,000 625.00
3306 c image(Honour's) City Post, Charleston S.C., 2c Black (4LB3). Three large margins, touched at top, ms. "H" cancel, used with 3c Orange Red (11), large margins, ms. cancel, gum stains around edges, both stamps tied by blue "Charleston S.C. Paid Apr. 2" (ca. 1854) circular datestamp on small cover to Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., faint toning

VERY FINE. A VERY RARE TIED COMBINATION OF THE HONOUR'S "CITY POST" CARRIER STAMP AND 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE.

Ex Lichtenstein and Golden. Signed Bloch. With 1968 Friedl certificate (Image)

E. 4,000-5,000 4,000.00

Dec. 25" Christmas Day circular datestamp and used with Blood's 1c Bronze on Lilac (15L14), acid tied, on fresh buff illustrated Philadelphia Railroad Map cover to Wilmington Delaware, clear "Blood's Despatch Dec. 25, 1864 6AM" circular datestamp and Wilmington Dec. 25 receiving backstamp, Extremely Fine Gem, a gorgeous illustrated Railroad cover with the Blood's stamp used on Christmas Day (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 1,800.00
3309 c imageBouton's Manhattan Express, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Pink (17L1). Large margins, gum stain, uncancelled as usual, used on brown cover to local street address, pencil "WB-- Deliver this without fail this day. Dean" and "Paid Bouton" printed in identical pencil, with Mar. 1, 1848, letter enclosure, couple minor stains in cover

VERY FINE. ONE OF SEVEN OR EIGHT REPORTED EXAMPLES OF BOUTON'S MANHATTAN EXPRESS STAMP. ONLY FOUR COVERS ARE KNOWN.

The Manhattan Express was operated by William V. Barr as early as October 1845 until sometime soon after Valentine's Day 1847, when Barr sold out to John R. Bouton. The first stamp issued under Bouton's ownership is the 2c on Pink (17L1). Approximately seven or eight examples are known, uncancelled, including four used on covers. This is the only one with a P.F. certificate stating genuinely used on cover.

With 2000 P.F. certificate that describes the "Paid Bouton" pencil notation as "non-contemporary" (an opinion with which we vehemently disagree). (Image)

E. 2,500-3,500 2,500.00
3310 ng imageBouton's Manhattan Express, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Pink (17L1). Cut to shape mostly clear of oval, unused (no gum), Fine, a very rare stamp (seven or eight known), signed Sloane, ex Schwartz (where it realized $800 hammer) (Image) 900.00 230.00

3313 c imageBrowne & Co.'s City Post Office, Cincinnati O., 2c Black (29L2). Large margins showing parts of adjoining stamps, outer framelines just touched in places, fine impression, tied by red "Browne & Co. City Post. Paid" circular handstamp on lady's small cover to local street address, with polite letter on decorative stationery (no date)

EXTREMELY FINE. A CHARMING EXAMPLE OF THE BROWNE & CO. 2-CENT STAMP ON COVER. VERY SCARCE AND MOST DESIRABLE WITH THE STAMP TIED BY THE COMPANY'S RED HANDSTAMP.

The 1c stamp, 29L1, was designed with the "Brown & Co." spelling error. The correct spelling, Browne (with an "e"), appears on the 2c stamp and the markings used by the post.

Ex Golden (Image)

E. 4,000-5,000 4,250.00
3314 ng imageBrowne's Easton Despatch, Easton Pa., 2c Black on Red (30L1). Unused (no gum), three enormous margins, full at top, small faults barely visible on face

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF FIVE OR SIX KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE BROWN'S EASTON DESPATCH POST 2-CENT ON VERMILION, SCOTT 30L1.

Of the six 30L1 stamps located in our records, there is some doubt about the genuineness of an uncancelled stamp affixed to a cover, leaving four pen-cancelled stamps and the uncancelled stamp offered here.

With 2001 P.S.E. certificate. Scott Retail $5,000.00 for a pen-cancelled stamp. (Image)
