"X" cancel, used on folded cover from Montreal, Canada, to Boston Mass., clear strike of red "Montreal Canada Paid SP 16, 1848" tombstone datestamp, red ms. "4-1/2" Canadian rate, neatly docketed on flap, interesting notation on inside indicates that this was the transmittal cover for a letter to be posted by steamer from Boston, requesting addressee to "pay the United States Postage" VERY FINE. AN UNUSUALLY FRESH AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE UNITED STATES 1847 ISSUE USED FROM CANADA. At this stage of U.S.-Canadian postal relations, it was possible to prepay U.S. postage on mail from Canada to the U.S. with stamps supplied to Canadian post offices. In this case the sender in Montreal correctly prepaid the 5c under-300 miles rate from the border to Boston. "1/5-1/2" Canadian rate, backstamped Kingston and Belleville (both Jul. 21), vertical file fold EXTREMELY FINE. THIS JULY 17, 1847, COVER IS THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THE UNITED STATES FIRST GENERAL ISSUE TO OR FROM CANADA. The earliest recorded use of the 1847 Issue is the 10c cover from New York City to Indianapolis, postmarked July 2, 1847. The earliest use of the 1847 Issue to a foreign destination is the 10c cover from Philadelphia to London, postmarked July 14, 1847. Next in line is this July 17 cover to Canada, which is the earliest use of the 1847 Issue on a cover to any location in British North America. The 10c 1847 stamp paid the single-rate postage to the U.S.-Canada border. From there to Belleville, the rate was calculated at 1 shilling 5-1/2 pence, approximately 18 pence, which corresponds to the 9p rate for distance (about 250 miles), doubled for weight over one-half ounce.
