3088 c imagePeace Dove. Sharp detailed strike ties 3c Rose (65), "New-York Apr. 12" (1866) duplex circular datestamp on pristine cover to Evansville Ind.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE CLEAREST STRIKES OF THE NEW YORK CITY "PEACE DOVE" FANCY CANCEL KNOWN ON COVER.

Although collectors have previously given this fancy cancellation the title "Bird on Nest", in our opinion it is more accurately described as the "Peace Dove". The design copies contemporary illustrations of a dove carrying the banner of peace (see lot 3085), and its use in April 1866 coincides with post-Civil War sentiments toward peace and reconstruction. The New York City Soldier's Head cancellation was used within the same month, and the 15c Lincoln commemorative (Scott 77) was issued in April 1866.

We estimate that a total of twelve to fifteen Peace Dove covers exist, about half of which are clear strikes. With the private sale of Louis Grunin's collection of New York City cancellations to John R. Boker Jr. and subsequent acquisition of the Boker fancy cancel collection by a European collector, three of the finer-quality Peace Dove covers have been taken off the market indefinitely.

Sep. 30" duplex circular datestamp on cover to Salem N.Y., reduced about -1/2 in. at right and small repair at bottom right corner, still an Extremely Fine strike of this very scarce and desirable cancellation, ex Grunin (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 1,100.00
3092 c image"A.J." (Andrew Johnson). Bold strike of this pro-Johnson political cancel ties 3c Rose (65), second part strike with duplex "Brattleboro Vt. 11 Feb." circular datestamp on cover to Hazardville Conn., slightly reduced and couple small tears at right, faint edge stains, still Very Fine, the Brattleboro postmaster created a number of unusual cancels, including the Devil & Pitchfork, Uncle Sam Thumbing Nose and this Andrew Johnson "A.J." design, which appears to express pro-Johnson sentiments (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 750.00
