Tied by "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai, Mar. 16 10PM 94" duplex datestamp on cover from Tientsin, China to Normal Ill., printed "United States Consulate Tientsin, China" return address, San Francisco, Chicago and receiving backstamps, with original contents dated 1894, contents read in part "we managed to reach Tientsin by the last steamer from Shanghai to Tientsin before the closing of the port for the winter", trivial edgewear, Very Fine, scarce usage, the port at Tientsin froze between November and late February every year, making the carriage of mails somewhat difficult at best as the nearest usable port was at Chinkiang, some 700 miles away (Image) E. 200-300 525.00
