Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
32 c imageU.S. Postal Agency Shanghai/Registered/Jun. 3/187-. Multiple strikes with absent fourth digit in year date, tying 5c Blue (179), 10c Brown (161) and France 5c Ceres on registered cover to New York City street address, French stamp partly covered by 10c, magenta "San Francisco Cal. Jul. 5, 1879" four-line datestamp on back, 5c stamp barely affected from placement over edge of cover

VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE COMBINATION OF UNITED STATES AND FRENCH STAMPS ON A REGISTERED COVER FROM CHINA TO THE UNITED STATES. VERY FEW COVERS ARE KNOWN WITH THIS REGISTERED DATESTAMP.

The French stamp was probably affixed in anticipation of mailing via the French Post Office in Shanghai, but it did not serve postal duty, because the sender evidently changed his mind and used the U.S. office. The U.S. Post Office in Shanghai circular datestamp with the integral "Registered" is extremely rare (see lot 28).

With 1985 P.F. certificate (Image)
