Service, Shanghai, China, Sep. 27 1PM 1920" duplex datestamp on European-size registered cover to Eugene Klein in Philadelphia, purple San Francisco and receiving backstamps, negligible toning

FINE-VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE COMPLETE SET OF THE BUREAU-OVERPRINTED OFFICES IN CHINA ISSUE USED ON COVER.

The return address on back is Arnhold Brothers & Co. in Shanghai. The enclosed letter is from Theodore Siddall, a stamp dealer, to his more famous American colleague, Eugene Klein. Siddall writes a fascinating philatelic letter about the Offices in China overprints, sending ten sets by mail, commenting "the American post office is the least accommodating of all the offices here, and anyway their cancellation is the worst of all" and other notes about German and Russian Offices in China issues. "United States Postal Agency, Shanghai, China" written in its place, no origin datestamp but with Chicago Aug. 4, 1919 and Aug. 6 receiving backstamps, minor edgewear barely affects a few stamps, folds do not affect stamps

FINE-VERY FINE. A COLORFUL EARLY USAGE OF A COMPLETE SET OF THE OFFICES IN SHANGHAI OVERPRINTS.

The normal transit time was approximately 25-30 days, with some taking slightly longer. Working backwards towards the July 1, 1919 issue date, this cover was probably sent during the first week the stamps were on sale, if not on the first day. The addressee, H. F. Colman, was a prominent Washington D.C. stamp dealer. (Image)
