to U.S. Navy Pay Office in Washington D.C., mixed franking with
horizontal pair of China 6c Empress Dowager Issue with gutter
selvage at left, cancelled by blue customs "seal" on back, matching
"Customs Tientsin Jan. 7, 1895" double-circle datestamp, also blue
"Customs Shanghai Jan. 20, 1895" transit, U.S. stamps tied by "U.S. Postal
Agency, Shanghai, Jan. 25 10PM 95" duplex datestamp, blue "Registered"
handstamp probably applied at Shanghai Customs Office, red "R" in oval,
purple San Francisco (Feb. 24) and receiving (Mar. 2) backstamps, light
edgewearVERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR AND EXTREMELY RARE OUTBOUND REGISTERED USAGE FROM TIENTSIN TO THE UNITED STATES, WITH A MIXED FRANKING OF THE CHINA DOWAGER ISSUE AND UNITED STATES FIRST BUREAU ISSUE. The cover was carried by Imperial Chinese Post from Tientsin to Shanghai, where it was handed to the U.S. Postal Agency in Shanghai for delivery to final destination. The registry fee at this time was 8c, thus the 15c U.S. postage overpays the 5c U.P.U. rate and registry fee by 2c. (Image) |

eight originally forming horizontal strip with natural s.e. at bottom, used
with 2c Red, Ty. IV (279), vertical pair, also used with Chinese
Imperial Post 1c, 4c, two 5c and 10c stamps tied by "Tientsin 30
Mar. 1901" datestamps on large part of registered parcel wrapping to
Bangor Me., registry label, purple sender's company handstamp at bottom
left from H.M. Schultz & Co. in Tientsin, ms. "Insured for $43" at
bottom, China 10c stamp fell off during transit and was reaffixed with
purple "Bangor Maine May 3, 1901 Registry Dept." firmly tying stamp, bold
"Shanghai 10 Apr. 1901" circular datestamp from Chinese post, U.S. stamps
applied at Shanghai and cancelled by grids, stamps slightly faulty as to be
expected on such an oversize package wraper, Very Fine, a colorful and rare
