1c 1851 Issue
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
2047 image1c Blue, Ty. Ib (5A). Position 8R1E, large margins to touched showing complete design at top (identifying characteristic of the type), pretty Plate 1E color, detailed impression, light strike of town circular datestamp leaves design clearly visible

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS STAMP COMES FROM ONE OF THE TWO POSITIONS ON THE PLATE THAT YIELD THE BEST EXAMPLE OF TYPE Ib.

Type Ib was only produced as an imperforate stamp. Six positions on the plate furnished stamps qualifying as Type Ib -- Positions 3-6R and 8-9R -- distinguished by the complete design at top and nearly complete design at bottom. Positions 6 and 8R have the most complete design of the Type Ib positions.

With 1976 P.F. certificate (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPE IA STAMP.

Type Ia was produced from only 18 of the bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Examples with four full margins are rare. This stamp, in sound condition with enormous margins all around, is one of the finest extant.

With 1987 P.F. certificate (Image)

2050 image1c Blue, Ty. Ia (6). Positions 94-95R4, horizontal pair, large margins incl. part of adjoining stamp at left, lefthand stamp with bottom plumes just touched, right stamp with left plume intact and right plume just slightly cut in, deep rich Plate 4 color, detailed impression, neat circular datestamp

VERY FINE PAIR. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND CHOICE USED MULTIPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE IA IMPERFORATE.

Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III and IIIa). The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic).

With 1987 P.F. certificate (Image)

2052 og image1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Original gum, lightly hinged, huge margins all around incl. sheet margin at bottom, pretty Plate 1 Early color

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM BOTTOM SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPE II FROM PLATE 1 EARLY.

Stamps from Plate 1E, which produced the first 1c 1851's issued, are very scarce in original-gum condition and typically are toned or stained. This stamp is among the freshest and brightest Plate 1E examples we have encountered with original gum.

2053 image1c Blue, Ty. III (8). Positions 69-70L4, horizontal pair, huge margins incl. right sheet margin, parts of adjoining stamps at top and left, ample at bottom right, deep rich Plate 4 color, neat strike of large circular datestamp, wide breaks at top and bottom of both stamps

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB AND RARE PAIR OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE III IMPERFORATE ISSUE.

A small number of imperforate sheets from Plate 4 were issued before perforations were intruduced in 1857. Examples of the Type III imperforate are very scarce, and pairs are extremely rare, because only a few Type III positions were located together on Plate 4. The left stamp is probably one of the finest copies of this stamp in existence, but the extreme rarity of Type III imperforate multiples has even greater significance.

With 1970 and 1995 P.F. certificates (Image)

2054 nh image1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). L-shaped block of four, Mint N.H., enormous margins incl. significant parts of eight adjoining stamps, deep rich color and sharp impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL MULTIPLE CONTAINING FOUR SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED STAMPS EACH WITH ENORMOUS MARGINS.

The digitally-cropped image below shows that if this multiple were reduced, it would yield what is unquestionably the finest Mint Never-Hinged pair in existence. A truly remarkable multiple with extraordinarily tempting potential.

With 1990 P.F. certificate for block of twelve. Scott Retail as strip of three and single in hinged condition (Image)
