A SPECTACULAR AND EXTREMELY RARE MIXED-FRANKING COVER PAYING THE 6-CENT HAWAIIAN RATE TO THE UNITED STATES AND THE 6-CENT UNITED STATES RATE TO NOVA SCOTIA. During the period from July 1, 1870, to December 31, 1881, a new treaty established a rate of 6c for any letter (-1/2 oz.) between the United States and Hawaii. This could be paid by either U.S. or Hawaiian postage. However, for a letter with destined beyond U.S. borders, it was still necessary to add U.S. postage. Three such post-treaty rate combination covers are recorded. The second is to Nova Scotia and is seriously defective. The third is to England. Ex Knapp, Foote and Ishikawa (Image) |
