"/ 10" for 10c rate on red and blue 10-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover to Halesford Va., Very Fine, extremely rare up-rated handstamped "Paid" from West Virginia -- quite possibly an envelope prepared in advance of sale -- ex Kohn and Murphy, signed Brian Green (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 1,000.00
2492 c image5c Olive Green, Stone 1 (1c). Full margins to touched at upper right, beautiful shade, tied by clearly struck "Wilmington N.C. Paid 5 28 Dec." integral-rate circular datestamp on buff cover to Newbern N.C. with green "Confederate States of America" River Scene and Verse Patriotic design (Dietz MS-1 with Verse 29)

EXTREMELY FINE. AN IMMACULATE EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE RIVER SCENE PATRIOTIC WITH "DIXIE LAND" VERSE. ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVERS EXTANT.

This allegorical scene depicts a riverboat and mountains, framed by cotton, sugar cane and tobacco plants. The verse used in this design is fascinating: "Death to each marauding band, Who would defile this glorious land -- The white and black man's Dixie! For e'en our slaves would take a hand, To drive the foe from Dixie!"

Ex Finney and Dr. Green. From our 1983 Rarities and Dr. Green sales, where it realized $4,000 hammer and $8,500 hammer, respectively. (Image)

(?)" double-circle datestamp on yellow cover with 11-Star Confederate Flag and Verse Patriotic design (Dietz F11-16) to Zain Manor N.C., the presence of an additional "Tawboro N.C. Aug. 17" ms. pmk. and waterstains indicating an earlier stamp was removed suggest that the cover was re-used in correspondence between the same parties (such forms of adversity usage are known)

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING "TEN" PATRIOTIC USAGE.

Ex Everett. Signed Ashbrook. With 1977 C.S.A. certificate (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE LARGE MULTIPLE OF THE HOYER & LUDWIG ESSAY.

Ex Nunnelly. 1986 Dietz does not list a multiple -- value for fourteen singles is $7,000.00. (Image)

E. 4,000-5,000 3,500.00
2496 ogbl image5c Blue, Stone 2 (4). Pane of 200 (less three stamps) with vertical gutter between, Positions 3-5 removed from left pane, over 160 stamps Mint N.H., original gum applied by brush, heavy brown gum toning on left pane, thins in top left corner block of four, two stamps with small holes, two vertical creases thru one row in each pane, many stamps with small stains

FINE-VERY FINE. THIS REMARKABLE SHEET IS THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE OF THE 1862 5-CENT BLUE LITHOGRAPH AND, IN FACT, STANDS AS THE LARGEST SURVIVING MULTIPLE OF ANY CONFEDERATE LITHOGRAPHED GENERAL ISSUE.

Purchased by John R. Hill Jr. from Raymond and Roger Weill in 1987, who had purchased it from Phil Ward in 1963. It was acquired by the current owner thru a private treaty purchase from the Hill collection.

Ex Walcott (lot 321). Scott Retail as gutter pairs, blocks of four, pairs and one single (Image)

55,480.00 16,500.00
2497 ogbl image5c Blue, Stone 2 (4). Bottom margin block of 80, Pos. 21-100 including complete transfer stone of 50 at bottom, assortment of plate varieties, original gum, more than 50 stamps Mint N.H., others h.r., some stamps throughout the pane have faults incl. creases, tears, stains and thins

VERY FINE APPEARING BLOCK OF 80 OF THE 1862 5-CENT BLUE LITHOGRAPH FROM THE SECOND PRINTING STONE USING THE STONE 2 TRANSFER BLOCK. THIS IS THE SECOND OR THIRD LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE OF THE ISSUE.

Comparing this multiple with lot 2496, the sheet from Stone 2, there is an obvious difference in alignment between the 50 transfer-stone positions at bottom and the row above in any of the four quadrants of Stone 2. Therefore, this block of 80 must come from the second printing stone that was made from the Stone 2 transfer stone.

Scott Retail for Stone 2 blocks of four (Image)
