Mobile Ala., 2c Black
(58X1). Large margins except at bottom left corner where barely
touched, faint gum toning, small sealed tear at top right, tied by "Mobile
Ala. Feb. 26, 1862" double-circle datestamp on tiny cover with local
address, top edge trimmed slightly and flap reaffixedVERY FINE APPEARING STAMP AND AN ATTRACTIVE SMALL COVER. EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT MOBILE PROVISIONAL USED ON A DROP LETTER. The Crown book records just 23 covers with the 2c Mobile. However, despite its distinctive design and established rarity, the 2c Mobile is assigned the lowest value among the ten different 2c Confederate provisionals listed and priced in the Scott Catalogue. By our estimation the Mobile should be valued at least on a par with the New Orleans 2c Blue provisional on cover, which is more common (29 recorded) but priced at $4,250. (Image) |
