Bishop's City Post, Cleveland
O., (1c) Blue (10LB1). Unused (no gum), ample margins to just touching
at top, deep shade, corner crease at top left and sealed tear at top
rightVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE UNCANCELLED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE BISHOP'S BLUE CARRIER STAMP. Henry S. Bishop was appointed to operate the Cleveland carrier department on December 21, 1853. Research by Elliott Perry shows that Bishop became an employee of the post office on July 1, 1854, but the city post continued to function, with or without his direct participation. Bishop issued two stamps: the 10LB1 Blue with blank oval, presumably designed to accommodate more than one denomination, and the 10LB2 Black with 2c value. Both are very rare. Ex Middendorf (Image) |

U.S. Penny Post, St. Louis
Mo., 2c Blue (8LB3). Huge top margin with dividing line and trace of
adjoining stamp, large margin at right and clear at left, slightly in at
bottom, cancelled by ms. "X", perfectly struck "Paid" straightline on
10-1/4 x 8-1/4 inch gilt-and-lace decorated Valentine cover to
"Mrs. Scoot, Sixth Street above Morgan Street next door to No. 170, St.
Louis, Moissori", with original Valentine enclosure, elaborately
embellished with gilt and enamel decoration, sender's love poem to "Mrs.
Scoott" dated "Feb 13/57", with the exception of a small missing
piece of lace at the upper right of cover, both the cover and enclosure are
in excellent conditionEXTREMELY FINE. THE MOST SPECTACULAR OF THE FOUR RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE ST. LOUIS 2-CENT BLUE CARRIER (8LB2), OF WHICH ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN IN TOTAL. A REMARKABLE STAMP, ISSUED CIRCA 1857 AND MODELED UPON THE ONE-CENT 1851-57 FRANKLIN STAMP AND THE 1852 3-CENT SILVER COIN. Elliott Perry theorized that the design of this stamp was a cross between the 1851 1c stamp (ornamental border) and the 1852 3c silver coin known as a "fish-scale", which had the shield in six-point star design (see Pat Paragraphs, reprint, pp. 263-264). The concept was "something between" 1c and 3c. Our records contain just five examples of 8LB2: 1) "1 ct" cancel, off cover, ex Golden, Siegel Sale 817, lot 425, 2) tied by "1 ct" in frame on cover to Edwin Harrison, ex Middendorf, 3) used on large Valentine cover to Mrs. Scoot, dated Feb. 13, 1857, ms. "X" cancel (not tied) and "Paid" straightline, ex Bulger, the cover offered here, 4) tied by "1 ct" in frame on cover to Miss St. Denis, the cover offered in lot 2404, and 5) cut to oval shape, tied by "Paid" in arc on large Valentine cover to Mrs. Scoot, Sloane photo. Ex Bulger. Scott Retail for off-cover 8LB3 is $22,500.00 (Image) |

U.S. Penny Post, St. Louis
Mo., 2c Blue (8LB3). Large to huge margins except touched at bottom
left, tied by framed "1 ct" handstamp with second strike at left on
cover to "Miss St. Denis, Corner Plum & 3rd (at Mr. L'Hussieur), St.
Louis Mo.", small mend in backflapEXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF FOUR COVERS KNOWN WITH THE RARE ST. LOUIS 2-CENT BLUE CARRIER STAMP. THIS COVER IS THE FINEST OF THE THREE TIED EXAMPLES. A REMARKABLE AND OUTSTANDING CARRIER USAGE. The description for lot 2403 contains a complete record of the 8LB3 examples known to us. Of the three tied usages, one has a stamp that is cut to the shape of the design (No. 5 on the list), and the other has a stamp with faults (No. 2). This small cover with a sound four-margin stamp is arguably the finest of all known examples. Ex C. Corwith Wagner (Image) |
