6c Intense Black, 1894
Unwatermarked Bureau Issue (PR93). Original gum, lightly hinged,
perfectly centered with wide and well-proportioned margins, sharp
proof-like impressionEXTREMELY FINE GEM. PROBABLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 6-CENT 1894 UNWATERMARKED NEWSPAPER STAMP IN EXISTENCE. In our opinion, the catalogue value for this stamp is not commensurate with its rarity. There was only one printing of the 6c of this series, and only 9,705 stamps were issued. The following statistics for other rare values of the set proves our point: 36c (PR97)--9,935 issued--cat. $13,500, 96c (PR99)--7,827 issued--cat. $15,000, $3.00 (PR100)--9,215 issued--cat. $18,000, $6.00 (PR101)--5,250 issued--cat. $50,000. In comparison, the 6c, with just 9,705 issued, has a catalogue value of $3,000. With 1940 American Board of Experts, 1965 and 1992 P.F. certificates (Image) |
