combination with Samoa, 1887, 6p Maroon, Perf 12 x 11-1/2 (17b),
tied by blue "Apia Samoa Apr. 23" double-circle datestamp on cover to
Philadelphia with sender's endorsement "U.S.S. Nipsic, Apia, Samoa,
Ship's Letter", clearly struck "U.S. Charge to Collect 6 Cents"
two-line handstamp applied at San Francisco, faint S.F. May 12 receiving
datestamp on back along with strip of three 2c Red Brown (J16), tied
by bold "Received Phila. May 18, 6:30PM, 1888" circular datestamp, pencil
receipt docketing, slightly creased at top causing some minor creases in
stamps (small tear in one 2c)VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING SAMOA AND UNITED STATES MIXED FRANKING WITH SHORT PAYMENT OF SHIP-LETTER RATE MADE UP WITH POSTAGE DUE STAMPS. Although the sender attempted to prepay a 4c incoming ship letter rate, the correct rate was 10c, and the San Francisco exchange office marked the cover 6c due. Postage due was paid in Philadelphia and indicated with three 2c Postage Due stamps. The U.S.S. Nipsic was built in 1873 as a U.S. sloop of war. includes 1847 Reproductions, 1851-69 Issues, 1870-93 Bank Notes,
Columbians, Newspapers & Periodicals and Officials, some colors faded from
