Chubbuck, Bratto." imprint at bottom, slightly in at left, beautiful deep shade and impression, tied by red "Paid" straightline with matching "Brattleboro Vt. Sep. 18" circular datestamp on 1846 folded letter to Lewis B. Woodruff at New York City, file fold clear of stamp

VERY FINE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED COVERS WITH A BRATTLEBORO PROVISIONAL STAMP SHOWING ANY TRACE OF THE IMPRINT. UNUSUALLY CHOICE CONDITION AND A MOST ATTRACTIVE COVER.

Only five of the 52 Brattleboro provisional stamps recorded by Wall (32 off cover and 20 stamps on 19 covers) are from Position 8, below which the imprint is engraved. Two of the five are off cover, and three are on covers (one of which is cut in at bottom). Another cover to Lewis Woodruff, dated Sep. 6 and also bearing Position 8, was offered in our 2000 Rarities sale, where it realized $32,500 hammer.

Position 20, ample to large margins, tied by bold strike of red "Paid" arc, matching second strike at right and "New-York 5 cts. 15 Jul." integral-rate datestamp on 1845 part-printed shipping notice to Frankfurt, Germany, red framed "Colonies &c Art. 12" accountancy handstamp, manuscript debits, red British transit backstamp, small receiving backstamp, stamp with minute sealed tear at left and faint gum toning (neither mentioned on certificate)

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE NEW YORK POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL USED ON THE EARLIEST RECORDED DATE OF USE.

Philip T. Wall records a total of seven New York provisionals used on July 15, the earliest recorded date of use. There is an eighth cover dated July 15, bearing a pair, of which Wall was unware. Of the eight covers, three are cover fronts only or have been extensively restored. There is one other recorded on this date to Germany, which is seriously defective. Only two other July 15 covers compare favorably to this cover.
