mostly clear strike of "Fort Buchanan N.M. Feb. 28" Type 1 circular
datestamp on cover to Sacramento Cal., stamp tied at origin by red
"FRANCO/EN ALAMOS" Mexican "Paid in Alamos" two-line handstamp in
frame, matching red "3" rate handstamp on back, stamp has small pre-use
horizontal tear across top (barely visible and not noted on certificate),
small opening faults in flap and tiny tears at topVERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED COVERS ORIGINATING IN MEXICO WITH THE "FRANCO EN ALAMOS" HANDSTAMP. THIS IS THE ONLY ONE WITH THE STAMP TIED. This cover originated in the Mexican post office at Alamos with 3c U.S. postage prepaid by the 1857 stamp. It was tied by the red "Paid in Alamos" handstamp and sent to Fort Buchanan, New Mexico, where it entered the mails for California. Ex Dike, Shipley and Sevenoaks.
