2003 imageJohn Adams. Bold signature as President on 12 x 15in. patent for the "new and useful improvement called the Effeminate Ropery (Machine), for spinning Rope Yarn" issued to John Pitman of Rhode Island, dated Dec. 24, 1799, also signed by Timothy Pickering (Secretary of State) and Charles Lee (Attorney General) at bottom, $4.00 Pennsylvania Embossed Revenue (unlisted in Scott) with second page providing description of the Effeminate Ropery Machine, one horizontal and two vertical file folds with one file fold splitting Adams and Pickering's first and last names (barely affecting left tail of "Adams"), otherwise very fresh and intact

VERY FINE DOCUMENT FEATURING JOHN ADAMS SIGNATURE AS PRESIDENT AND AN UNLISTED $4.00 PENNSYLVANIA EMBOSSED REVENUE.

There is a footnote in Scott after the listings for the First Federal Issue that reads "The Act calls for a $2, $4, $5 and $10 stamp for each state, only the listed ones have been seen" -- making this the basis for a new listing (probably will be RM184). Combs states that there are two known examples of the $4.00 Pennsylvania embossed revenue -- both are on patents and this is the earlier of the two. Combs does not state if the other is signed by the President. (Image)
