20, 1850. Italic-style two-line datestamp in dark blue,
beautiful clear strike on blue folded letter datelined "Honolulu,
Sandwich Isl. Oct. 13th, 1850" to Mr. David Eldridge, Barnstable Mass.,
orange-red "San Francisco Cal. 1 Dec." circular datestamp with red pencil
"42", small faults, letter with interesting content "We arrived here
last Sunday, the 6th after a passage of 142 days ... fine weather...except
off Cape Horn...Saw in one of the Sandwich Island papers the death of
President Taylor, the Whigs seem to have rather hard luck about their
Presidents, this being the second one they lost right off..."VERY FINE. THIS NEW DISCOVERY IS THE EARLIEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE HONOLULU STRAIGHTLINE -- THE FIRST HAWAIIAN POSTAL MARKING. OF THE THIRTY RECORDED IN THE WHEELER CENSUS, ONLY SIX ARE STRUCK IN BLUE. This recently-discovered cover was carried under the Treaty of 1849, which provided for the exchange of mails between the U.S. and Hawaii. (Image) |

Hawaii. Oval handstamp with ornament on cover from the Reverend David
Lyman to his son in Kau, ms. endorsement "Business of Interior
D.B.L." at bottom left, couple non-contemporary blue ink spots touching
oval, opened bit roughly at left leaving cover slightly reduced, Fine and
very scarce -- in 1836, Mr. Lyman, a member of the Fifth Company,
established the Hilo Boys' Boarding School and was its active principal
until his resignation in 1874 -- our Honolulu Advertiser sale
contained only one example of this handstamp, and none was offered in the
