W. Harlle, Mars Bluff S.C., with instructions to postmaster there to
"forward to Gen. Harlle imediately" [sic], opening tears at top and
crease slightly affects stamp, otherwise Very Fine, ex Knapp (Image)

Knapp plating Position 9, top sheet margin, other sides large to touched at
left, tied by blue "Columbia S.C. May 11" circular datestamp on
bright yellow cover to Charleston Hotel, redirected back to Columbia with
bold "Charleston S.C. May 12, 186-" circular datestamp and red crayon "for
5" (forwarded 5c due) notation, opening tear along upper edge does not

slightly in on one side, tied by blue "Charlottesville Va. Jul. 2,

bottom sheet margin, each tied by large 8-bar grid, "Canton Miss. Dec. 9,

Horizontal Pair, Wide Gutter Between (4b var). Large margins to clear,
beautiful bright shade, tied by clear "Clarksville Va. Jul. 23" (1862)
circular datestamp on brown homemade cover to Baydton Va., left stamp has
minute tear, right stamp has slight corner crease, vertical crease in
gutter where folded between panesVERY FINE. ONLY A FEW 5-CENT BLUE LITHOGRAPH GUTTER MULTIPLES EXIST IN USED CONDITION. THIS CHOICE COVER FROM THE STEPHEN BROWN SALE MIGHT BE THE FINEST.
The Dietz book states "The existence of used gutter pairs reveals that full uncut sheets of 200 were delivered to at least some post offices. Used gutter pairs or blocks are rarities, on or off cover."
