VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS HALF-PANE OF 50 WAS THE FIRST DISCOVERY OF EVIDENCE THAT THE PATERSON FIRM PRINTED CONFEDERATE POSTAGE STAMPS. A SPECTACULAR AND SIGNIFICANT PHILATELIC RELIC.

This block is illustrated in the 1929 Dietz book (p. 135), and its significance is explained in detail. Prior to 1912, philatelists were unaware that the firm of J. T. Paterson & Co. printed stamps for the Confederate government. The discovery of this Paterson imprint block by J. Murray Bartels was announced in The Philatelic Gazette, June 15, 1912. According to Dietz, soon after Bartel's discovery, at least two full panes of 100 came to light.
