used four-margined stamps arranged on small black pages by shade, almost
all have large margins (a few ample to clear), several huge incl. one with
sheet margin at right (Blackish Brown, ex Haas and illustrated on front
cover of that catalogue), each a different shade incl. five shades of Brown
from Pale to Dark, four shades of Red Brown, three shades of Orange Brown,
three of Grayish Brown, two of Blackish Brown, two of Olive Brown, four of
Brownish Orange, all arranged from Pale to Dark, perhaps the highlight of
the color chart is a Red Orange (Scott 1c) with full to large
margins and red New York square grid cancel, cancels incl. red grids, blue
town (2), blue grids, six stamps (one Brown, two Orange Brown, one Blackish
Brown, one Olive Brown and one Brownish Orange) have either very light
creases or tiny thin specks not readily apparent as the stamps were
selected as much for condition as for shadeEXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB AND INCALCULABLY RARE COLOR CHART OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE, SHOWING THE TREMENDOUS VARIETY OF SHADES AVAILABLE ON THIS STAMP. THE RED ORANGE IS PARTICULARLY RARE AS A FOUR-MARGINED STAMP. This color chart was compiled with the assistance of the late Creighton C. Hart.
