EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE PROOF SHOWING EXPERIMENTAL BEMROSE ROULETTES AT TOP. A WONDERFUL HISTORICAL ARTIFACT OF THE EXPERIMENTS LEADING UP TO THE PERFORATING OF UNITED STATES POSTAGE STAMPS.

In October 1856, Toppan, Carpenter purchased a machine from Bemrose & Sons of Derby, England, which could either perforate or roulette postage stamps. At the same time, Toppan, Carpenter sent two full sheets of proofs (obliterated with penstrokes) to the manufacturer so that the cyliner and rouletting wheels could be adjusted prior to shipment of the machines to the U.S. However, the proofs were unsuitable for this purpose due to the fragile nature of the India paper, as is evidenced by the uneven rouletting at top.

Scott Retail for normal Plate Proof on India with no premium for the rouletting. (Image)
