EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE SCARCE PLUM SHADE OF THE IMPERFORATE 3-CENT PRINTED IN 1857.

Chase states that the Plum shade was produced in early 1857, shortly before the introduction of perforated stamps. Chase compares the shade to an intermediate shade of Scott 280 of the 1894 Issue. Some students believe that no more than 50 examples are known.

Chase plating note on back. Accompanied by small photocopy from Dr. Amonette identifying this stamp as the Plum shade. We believe this shade to be undercatalogued in Scott at $400.00. (Image)
