FINLAND, 1856, 5k Blue,
Tete-Beche Pair (1a). Original gum, large margins all around, rich
color, original gum, very slight vertical crease caused naturally by
gumEXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM TETE-BECHE PAIR OF THE FINLAND 5-KOPECK STAMP. ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST RECOGNIZABLE CLASSIC PHILATELIC RARITIES. The Finland first issue was printed on a small press at the Office of the Treasury in Finland. As the press was not large enough to accommodate a complete sheet, the stamps were printed using the "work and turn" method, where the first horizontal row of ten stamps was printed, then the paper was turned to produce the second and final row. This accounts for the mostly uneven layout of the tete-beche pairs. While researching other known examples of this stamp in tete-beche form, we noticed that the margins at right of this pair perfectly match the block of four in the 1939 Agathon Faberge Collection. This pair originally formed a block of six with that block of four. With 1922 R.P.S. certificate. Accompanied by 1943 Pelander lot card, from which the Halls acquired this rarity. (Image) |

The 10p Red Brown error occurred when the wrong cliche was inserted into the 5p plate. Specialists estimate that approximately 20 examples of the 10p Red Brown exist, unused or used.
