CHINA, 1912, $5.00 Deep Green
& Salmon, Foochow Issue (137, Chan 143). Unused (no gum),
well-centered, deep rich colors and clear strike of the overprint in
blackEXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE $5.00 FOOCHOW OVERPRINT ISSUE. According to the Chan catalogue, after the Republic of China was formed, the postal authorities ordered that stamps should be overprinted with the words "Provisional Neutrality". Fifteen denominations were prepared, but only four -- the 3c, $1.00, $2.00 and $5.00 -- were released before the government, criticising the wording, ordered that they be withdrawn from use. Nanking Issue Overprint, Overprint Shifted to Right (141 var, Chan
147a). Original gum, rich color, clearly showing the red overprint
shifted to the right and with one character printed at far leftVERY FINE AND AN OUTSTANDING RARITY. LESS THAN TEN EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN SHOWING THIS OVERPRINT VARIETY. The vertical "Republic of China" overprint was added to stamps already overprinted "Provisional Neutrality" horizontally. This was unacceptable to the government, and so the issue was quickly withdrawn from sale. Only 200 of these stamps were sold at the Shanghai, Nanking and Hankow post offices. Unissued Postage Due (Unlisted, Chan DU2). Horizontal gutter margin
block of four, imperforate between upper stamps and gutter, unused (no
gum), six security punch holes, fresh and Very Fine, stamps of -1/2c, 4c,
5c and 20c were prepared for use by Waterlow & Son in London but were never
issued due to the downfall of the Ching dynasty, this comes from their
archives and is contains two of the ten recorded vertical gutter pairs,
with copy of 1994 Holcombe certificate, Chan $7,200.00 for four singles

denomination in complete strip of eight as issued, without gum as issued,
each with Die II and Die III in se-tenant pairs, crisp impressions, each
with vertical file fold between stamps, otherwise Very Fine, Scott
catalogue states that the reprints were made to present sample sets to
other post offices, Chan $1,280.00 as singles

-1/2c-20c Postage Dues, Imperforate (J14var-J20var). Each value in
complete sheet of 50 with selvage all around, each clearly shows "Kung Pu"
watermark, 2c unused (no gum), others original gum, the 5c, 10c and 20c
each have pencil date notations in margin from 1893, the 20c with sealed
tear at top affecting two stamps, trivial edgewear to be expectedVERY FINE AND VERY RARE COMPLETE SET OF IMPERFORATE SHEETS OF FIFTY OF THE 1893 SHANGHAI LOCAL POST POSTAGE DUES. PROBABLY UNIQUE AS COMPLETE SHEETS. Unlisted in Scott as imperforate. (Image) |
