Sanitary Fair
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
405 c imageGreat Central Fair, Philadelphia, 10c Blue, 20c Green, 30c Black (WV11-WV13). Complete set, tied by clearly-struck "Great Central Fair June 25, 1864" datestamps on purple cover addressed to Leamington, England, carried outside of the mails

VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO COMPLETE COVERS BEARING A COMPLETE SET OF THE GREAT CENTRAL FAIR STAMPS.

Because the Great Central Fair stamps were effectively charitable donations and also had souvenir value, it is logical that participants in the fair would frank a number of messages with 60c sets. The census of set usages is: 1). The cover offered here, 2). Cover dated June 11, 1864 and addressed to the Central Fair P.O. (our Sale 766A, lot 1264), and 3). Back of cover only bearing set cancelled by June 18, 1864 datestamps (our sale 766A, lot 1265).
