394 c imageBoyce's City Express Post, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Green Glazed (19L1). Ample margins to just in, partly clear impression on deep green paper, uncancelled but appears to have originated with 3c Dull Red (11), large margins to just touched, tied by "New-York May 27" circular datestamp on small cover to Prattsburgh N.Y., ca. 1855 usage

EXTREMELY FINE. THE BOYCE'S CITY EXPRESS POST STAMP IS EXTREMELY RARE, WITH PERHAPS EIGHT TO TEN KNOWN ON COVERS AND ANOTHER FOUR OR FIVE OFF COVER.

Very little is known about Boyce's City Express Post. Nothing in the city directories ties any particular Boyce to the post, nor are there advertisements or source material to identify the proprietor.

Covers are dated from December 1852 through June 1856, a wide time span for a post with such rare stamps. The most reliably-dated example is the ex-Boker cover to Germany, sent by the Ocean Line steamship Washington, with a New York Jun. 14 debit datestamp tying the Boyce's stamp. Based on sailing dates in 1852 through 1856, the June 14th departure must be 1856 -- the markings on the cover and sender's ship-name designation corroborate the Washington on this date. It is worth noting that four Boyce stamps (on and off covers) are cancelled by New York debit datestamps for foreign-mail usage.

With 2000 P.F. certificate stating "Genuine Scott 19L1" but declining opinion as to usage. Ex Ferrary, Mason and Ackerman. (Image)

395 E imageBoyd's Dispatch Unadopted Essays, Ca. 1884. Five items: two artist's pen-ink-and-wash essays, one with pencil notation on back "Submitted by Baldwin & Gleason, 55 Cedar St. City" -- according to album write-up, this firm was located at this address from 1882 to 1884, which is just at the end of Boyd's letter-carrying business -- accompanied by a third hand-drawn essay for "Boyd's City Despatch" and a printer's proof of the same design, which was used as a logo for delivery lists (example included) after Boyd's stopped carrying mail, Very Fine, each hand-executed essay is unique (Image) E. 2,000-3,000 3,250.00
396 c imageBrainard & Co., (5c) Black (24L1). Cut to shape slightly into frameline, pencil cancel (not tied), red "Forwarded by Brainard & Co. Albany" oval and "6" due handstamp on Sep. 9, 1844 folded letter from Albany to Philadelphia street address, partly readable strike of red Hale & Co. collect box

FINE. ONE OF FOUR RECORDED COVERS SHOWING CONJUNCTIVE USE OF BRAINARD & COMPANY'S BLACK ADHESIVE AND HALE'S SERVICE TO PHILADELPHIA.

Of the nine Black 24L1 covers we located in auction catalogues and our photo files (updated since our Hall sale), three were mailed from Troy, these are a Sep. 16, 1844, folded letter, an undated cover to William B. Marsh (both to New York City), and the conjunctive American Letter Mail Co. usage to Boston offered in the following lot. One of the remaining six Black 24L1 covers is a Jun. 21, 1845, folded letter with two tied stamps paying the double rate from New York City to Albany (ex Caspary). No less than five Black 24L1 covers were mailed from Albany. Among these is a Jul. 18, 1844, folded letter to New York City with the red Brainard & Co. Albany oval, bearing a stamp tied by pen cancel (ex Schwartz). The other four Black 24L1 covers from Albany, including this example, are from the well-known Cornelius & Co. correspondence, each addressed to Philadelphia, which involved conjunctive service between Brainard & Co. (Albany to New York City) and Hale & Co. (New York City to Philadelphia). In the case of this cover, the ex-Middendorf cover and the cover from our Hall sale (lot 238), the Brainard & Co. Black stamp paid half of the postage, and the other half (Hale's share) was represented by a "6" due marking (this cover also bears the Hale & Co. collect box). The fourth conjunctive-use cover from the Cornelius & Co. correspondence (ex Peltz) bears two Black 24L1 stamps for both rates involved and no due marking, which corroborates the genuine double-rate franking and the three single frankings (half prepaid, half unpaid).

397 c imageBrainard & Co., (5c) Black (24L1). Huge square margins, affixed with wafer, ms. "T" cancel (not tied), a remnant of a second stamp affixed to wafer at upper left, used on July 26, 1844 folded letter from Troy to Boston, no Brainard marking, conjunctive red "Forwarded by/American Mail Co./No. 12 State St. Boston" three-line handstamp, postscript to letter mentions use of express mail, ink smears at right, tiny tear in right margin of stamp

VERY FINE STAMP AND PRESENTABLE COVER. ONE OF TWO RECORDED COVERS WITH BRAINARD'S STAMP USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH AMERICAN LETTER MAIL COMPANY SERVICE.

Brainard & Co. provided service from Troy, but not to Boston, thus the letter was given to American Letter Mail Co. (transfer point unknown). At the time of the Hall sale, we had no record of this cover, it now becomes the second example of a Brainard stamped cover showing conjunctive use with American Letter Mail Company. (Image)

FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE TIED USE OF CUMMINGS' "LETTER & HEART" STAMP ON YELLOW PAPER.

The Cummings' "Letter & Heart" stamp was printed on three different papers -- Rose, Green and Yellow -- and although Yellow is the most common of the three, it is still quite scarce properly used on cover and extremely rare when tied. (Image)
