2c Brown, Re-Issue (124).
Original gum, fresh color and crisp impression, beautiful centering with
unusually wide and even margins all aroundEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE. AN EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE STAMP WITH SUCH WIDE AND WELL-BALANCED MARGINS. Although by no means the rarest of the 1869 Pictorial Re-Issue set, the 2c is suprisingly difficult to obtain in sound, original-gum condition with wide margins. This stamp was acquired by the Halls from dealer H. A. Robinette in 1943. (Image) |

3c Blue, Re-Issue (125).
Original gum, beautiful and bright Re-Issue shade, proof-like impression on
fresh paper, nearly perfect centering and wide balanced
marginsEXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE 3-CENT 1869 RE-ISSUE IN EXISTENCE, WITH BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED COLOR, PAPER AND GUM. Original sales figures show that among the 1869 Pictorial Re-Issues, the 3c and 90c stamps accounted for the smallest number of units sold (1,406 and 1,356, respectively). Overall, the 1869's were popular with stamp collectors, far outselling the 1851-60 and 1861-66 Re-Issue sets. However, the 90c stamp's high denomination and the availability of ordinary 3c stamps limited demand. Today, both are rare, and handling over the years has not been kind to most of the surviving examples. Acquired by the Halls in 1942 from the Knox collection. (Image) |

15c Brown & Blue, Re-Issue
(129). Vertical pair, neat target cancels and trace of blue crayon
registry marking on top stamp, rich frame color and intense vignette
impression on bright white paperVERY FINE AND CHOICE. THE ONLY RECORDED USED PAIR OF THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL RE-ISSUE. NO OTHER USED MULTIPLES ARE KNOWN. This pair is part of a "set" of bicolor 1869 Re-issue pairs -- 15c, 24c, 30c and 90c values -- each cancelled by targets. The 15c and 24c, both vertical pairs, also have portions of blue crayon strokes applied, similar to registered mail passing through the British post office. The existence of this set was revealed in an Aug. 1985 Chronicle article. It is believed that the four pairs were originally used on one or more pieces of registered mail addressed to the English stamp collector, Sir Nicholas Waterhouse, from whose collection the four pairs emanated. Ex Waterhouse and Juhring. With 2000 P.F. certificate. Unlisted as a pair in Scott. (Image) |
