1869 Pictorial Issue (30c to 90c)
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
147 og image30c Ultramarine & Carmine (121). Original gum, almost perfectly centered with wide and well-balanced margins all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A REMARKABLY FRESH AND BEAUTIFULLY-CENTERED ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE.

The 10c and 30c 1869 Pictorial stamps have unframed designs that can be difficult to judge in terms of centering and margins, because the wings at top and flag points at sides are often touched by the perforation holes. This stamp, with margins well clear of the extreme points of the design, is one of the finest original-gum 30c 1869's we have encountered.

With 2000 P.F. certificate (Image)

VERY FINE AND RARE USED BLOCK OF NINE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE.

Three blocks of nine are known, as are three blocks of twelve and irregular blocks of eleven and ten. Scott Retail as block of four, two pairs and a single. (Image)

150 image15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II, Center Inverted (119b). Rich colors, light strike of cork cancel leaves vignette clearly visible, centered slightly to lower left but perfs are well clear all around, small tears at top right and bottom left and small filled thins at center

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY 91 EXAMPLES OF THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT ERRORS ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.

Our census of 1869 Inverts contains 91 examples of the 15c Invert, including three unused and 88 used (one in the British Library's Tapling collection and three No. 119c varieties). We estimate that only twelve to fifteen used copies are sound, including copies with tiny corner creases. A large number -- more than half -- have serious faults or repairs.
