127 og image12c Black, Re-Issue (107). Original gum, h.r., intense shade and sharp proof-like impression, perfectly centered with enormous margins on all sides

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 12-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE IN EXISTENCE. A MARVELOUS STAMP IN TERMS OF GUM, IMPRESSION, CENTERING AND MARGINS.

Only 389 were issued. (Image)

128 og image24c Deep Violet, Re-Issue (109). Original gum, sharp proof-like impression on crisp bright paper, near perfect centering with long full perforations

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A WONDERFULLY CHOICE EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE RAREST 1861-66 RE-ISSUES. THE 24-CENT IS EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT TO LOCATE IN THIS SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

The quantity issued for the 24c 1861 Re-Issue (346) is close in number to several lower values, including the 12c and 15c (389 and 397, respectively). However, the 24c is scarcer and appears less frequently at auction. It is also one of the three values most difficult to obtain in choice original-gum condition (the others are the 3c and 30c).

129 og image24c Deep Violet, Re-Issue (109). Original gum, h.r., deep rich color and sharp proof-like impression on bright paper, choice centering

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 24-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE. ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT VALUES OF THE SET TO OBTAIN IN CHOICE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

The rarity of the 24c 1861 Re-Issue (346 issued) is underscored by the fact that a sound, well-centered, original-gum example realized $21,000 in our Sale 826.

Ex Stephen Brown, where acquired by the Halls in that 1939 auction. (Image)

130 og image30c Brownish Orange, Re-Issue (110). Original gum, h.r., intense color on bright paper, perfectly centered with well-balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE, WHICH IS ARGUABLY THE MOST CHALLENGING OF THE 1861-66 RE-ISSUES TO OBTAIN IN THIS GRADE.

Little space was left on the 30c 1861 plate for vertical rows of perforations between stamps, and the same plate was used for the 1875 Re-Issue. Therefore, well-centered copies with perforations clear at the sides are rare. When one takes into consideration the limited number sold (346) and other condition factors, such as gum and freshness of paper, the rarity of the stamp offered here can be truly appreciated. It was acquired by the Halls in the Stephen Brown sale held in 1939 and has been carefully preserved ever since. (Image)

131 og image90c Blue, Re-Issue (111). Original gum, well-centered, beautiful rich color and sharp proof-like impression on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1861 RE-ISSUE.

Numerically, the 90c 1861 Re-Issue is the rarest denomination of the series -- only 317 were issued. The example offered here is sound and beautiful with original gum, qualifying it as one of the finest extant.
