Natural s.e. at left, tied by bold strike of target and used with British Columbia, 1865, 3p Blue (7), horizontal strip of three, cancelled by light strikes of oval numeral on registered cover to Toronto, Canada West, bold "San Francisco Cal. 21 May" double-circle datestamp, bold "Registered" and "Paid" handstamps, May 14 origin datestamp and transits on back, strip has some perfs scissors-separated, barely reduced at right

VERY FINE. A RARE AND COLORFUL REGISTERED USAGE FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA TO TORONTO VIA THE UNITED STATES MAILS.

Many combination usages are on covers addressed to the United States. This cover, with its clear registry markings and Toronto address, is a great rarity of postal history. (Image)

Three, centered to top right with perfs in, one stamp (at upper right) has small internal tear, each cancelled by Japanese "X" bamboo chop cancel, used on folded letter (with part contents) from Yokohama, Japan, to Saxony, Germany, no year date but believed to have been sent from Yokohama on Sep. 30, 1868, and carried on the first trip of the S.S. Japan, orange-red "China and Japan Steam Service" double-line oval handstamp clearly struck at upper left (very early state of this marking), "San Francisco Cal. Oct. 21" transit datestamp, sent to New York City where carried by North German Lloyd steamer Hansa to Havre, red Verviers-Cologne transit, receiving backstamp, very minor scuffs in address panel

A VERY FINE AND COLORFUL COVER. REPORTED TO BE THE ONLY COVER CARRIED ON THE FIRST VOYAGE OF THE S.S. JAPAN AND THE ONLY COVER FROM YOKOHAMA TO SAXONY VIA UNITED STATES MAILS.

The 30c franking overpays the 25c postage -- 10c transpacific and 15c Prussian Closed Mail. This cover is illustrated and discussed in Richard B. Graham's series on China and Japan Steam Service (Chronicle, Aug. 1981). (Image)
