EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE USED BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE $4.00 COLUMBIAN. PROBABLY THE FINEST USED BLOCK IN EXISTENCE.

As with the $2.00 and $3.00 blocks in the Twigg-Smith collection, the Boston oval cancellations and presence of the blue crayon marking on this block indicate that it was properly used on registered mail. (Image)

A 4-ring target similar to the cancel found on dollar-value Columbian blocks is recorded on covers dated during the 1890's.
